Who’d have thought that building a Box™ could lead to 15 minutes of fame? It was the slower pace of life that drew Susie Flegg and Christine James to Waiheke Island from London – but now it’s a case of ‘spotlight on’ when their house airs on TV One’s Kiwi Living lifestyle show on August 7 at 7.30pm.
The couple’s modernist-style home on a hillside in Enclosure Bay features our trademark structural skeleton: glulam beams and stainless-steel cross bracing.
Susie and Christine liked the simplicity of the prefabricated design and they opted for the kitchen to be at the heart of the home, with two bedroom wings either side to ‘sandwich’ a generous courtyard. That way guests that came to stay (which happens regularly) would have their own quarters.
With its exposed structure and quiet materiality, the home is architecturally spare, but inside bright hues and eclectic pieces pump up the volume. As keen art collectors, the pair insisted on plenty of built-in shelving and a hallway ‘gallery’ that runs down the rear of the home for display purposes.
They love the layout and easy-care materiality of the house, its spectacular location, the garden they are nurturing, but most of all, the way it delights and surprises in the everyday – including gaining a spot as an ‘inspirational home’ on the TV show.
Look out for us on Kiwi Living this Friday. And if you miss the show, you can always watch it On Demand.
