Box™ takes a quaint central Auckland cottage and adds a taste of mid-century.
This Mount Eden cottage with its white weatherboards and hip roof was charming and cheerful, but space was limited. The young family required an extension that would give them room to breathe and a better connection to the garden.
Located within a heritage zone, the requirements dictated that the front façade be retained, so Box™ conceived an open-plan pavilion to the rear of the property.
The two-level structure that now leads off the original part of the home is clearly contemporary. Its expressed post and beam skeleton with steel cross bracing and black cladding is modernist in mood. However, while the contrast between old and new, traditional and current, dark and light, is celebrated, proportionally the duo is in balance. The scale of the extension reflects that of the older dwelling.
Internally, the footprint of the cottage was redefined to contain the bedrooms and bathrooms – a strategy that made sense since these are smaller, more intimate spaces. Within the open-plan extension, the main living takes place.
The transition between the two forms is intentionally definitive. The floor level not only steps down to offer an enhanced relationship with the site, but polished concrete was chosen to contrast with the cottage’s hardwood floors.
Practical and purposeful, the room also contains moments of design magic: the sculptural open-tread staircase that leads to the upper floor and the whirls of striated grain on the black marble bench.
The sun-soaked kitchen, living and dining area has generous sliding doors to provide visual and physical connection to the deck and a green lawn beyond, an aspect that the family makes full use of.
From the street, there’s little clue as to the expansive living that lies beyond the front porch.
